Jace, Architect of Thought

Jace is probably the most iconic planeswalker of Magic. I got this version of him by chance and decided to do something with him. I’m very happy with the way it came out, and added a rapier sword to make him more awesome.

Baneslayer Angel

I really love this card. It dominated standard format not long ago, and angels are just cool. Pretty art too, with potential to be beautifully altered, so I took my shot.

Ethercaste Knight

Another low value card I painted, one of my favourites too. I am a sucker for knights,  and the art on this card was awesome, so I wanted to alter it for practice.

Deft Duelist

Continuing with showing some of the first cards I altered. Deft Duelist is a common, cheap card, but I really loved the illustration and the duelist theme. Hope we see more cards like this in the future. Anyways, I’m really proud how this came out, so this is one of my favourite alters.

Nacatl

This is another one of my first alters, and one of the few full frameless art I’ve done, because I usually like to keep the textbox readable. I like a lot how this card turned out, but you can see the texture of the paint on some spots: I didn’t thin the paint correctly back then, and was having trouble painting on the varnished surface of the card.

First alter ever

This was the very first alter that I made. I started painting common and cheap cards, just to experiment with the acrylics and such. They came out pretty nice, so I slowly ventured into altering more expensive and iconic cards.

What is an "altered card"?

If you are visiting this blog, you already probably know what an “altered card” it’s. If, by chance, you don’t, here’s a brief explanation: basically, you paint with acrylics, oils or pen to expand or add to the original card art. This creates a unique version of that card, adding value to it as a foil version would, but all of these alters are hand painted and it is impossible to find two exactly equal.

There are various types of alters: borderless, frameless, partial alters, parodies, etc. Those are tournament legal, if they follow the rules listed in this link: http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=judge%2Farticle%2F20090414a

If you like Magic: The Gathering and you love it’s art and wonderful illustrations, and if you have a knack for collector and exclusive items, you might like the altered cards I present here.
